In vitro studies

“The Genetic Basis for Osteogenesis Stimulation by Controlled Release of Ionic Dissolution Products”

Larry L. Hench, David M. Gaisser

This study aims to demonstrate that the controlled release of inorganic ions, such as calcium and silicon, stimulate bone regrowth by acting on the cell cycle of osteoblast precursor cells.

“Antimicrobial Properties of 45S5 Bioactive Glass Particulate”

David M. Gaisser, David C. Greenspan

In this in vitro study five different bacterial cultures were exposed to the NovaBone bioglass and analyzed at 7, 14 and 28 days. This study shows that Novabone is effective in initially reducing the level of bacteria.

“Ionic Products of Bioactive Glass Dissolution Increase Proliferation of Human Osteoblasts and Induce Insulin-like Growth Factor II mRNA Expression and Protein Synthesis

Ioannis D.Xynos, Alasdair J.Edgar, Lee D.K.Buttery,
Larry L.Hench, Julia M Polak

This article aims to demonstrate how the ionic dissolution of NovaBone bioglass influences the proliferation of osteoblasts through in vitro tests. The results show that NovaBone induces the proliferation of osteoblasts by stimulating the entry of cells into the S phase, that of proliferation.

Orthopedics

“The Clinical Use of NovaBone as Substitute Bone Graft for the Repair of Bone Defects”

This study evaluates the efficacy of Novabone bioglass on 29 patients with acute fractures of long bones or revision procedures due to a delay or non-union of the fracture. At six months, the continuous formation of callus was observed in 19 patients and at 12 months in all 29. At one year, Novabone was effective for the repair of this type of bone defect, thus reducing the need to collect autologous bone.

Vertebral surgery

Bioactive Glass as a Bone Substitute for Spinal Fusion in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. A Comparative Study With Iliac Crest Autograft”

Brice Ilharreborde, MD, Etienne Morel, MD, Franck Fitoussi, MD, Ana Presedo, MD, Philippe Souchet, MD, Georges-Fran0ois Penne0ot, MD, and Keyvan Mazda, MD

The purpose of scoliosis surgery is to correct the deformity and achieve a solid fusion of the obtained correction. 88 patients were analyzed divided into predicted groups based on the substitute user. The results show that the bioglass has results like those obtained using but with far fewer complications and less reduction.

Maxillofacial surgery

“Bioactive-glass in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery”

Andrea Corrado Profeta, BDS (Hons), PhD1 Christoph Huppa, MD, DDS

This article analyzes the use of bio glasses in cranio-maxillofacial trauma and oral surgery.
